How to Use Flavoured Syrups in Coffee at Home
A good flavoured syrup is the quickest way to turn an everyday coffee into something that tastes like it came from your favourite café. A single pump adds vanilla, caramel or hazelnut without the fuss of making a flavoured milk or reaching for sugary sachets. Here is how to use flavoured syrups at home so your drinks taste balanced every time.
What are coffee syrups?
Coffee syrups are concentrated flavoured sugar syrups designed to dissolve cleanly into hot and cold drinks. The café-grade bottles we stock, like the Arkadia syrup range, are made to hold their flavour through milk, espresso and ice, so they behave the same way at your kitchen bench as they do behind a café counter.
Because they are already liquid, syrups mix in instantly, which is a real advantage in cold drinks where granulated sugar tends to sink and refuse to dissolve.
How much syrup should you use?
As a rule of thumb, start with around 10 ml of syrup, roughly two teaspoons, per standard coffee. A café-style measure is one "pump" per shot of espresso:
- Small latte or flat white: one pump (about 7.5 ml)
- Large latte or a strong flavour like caramel: two pumps
- Iced coffee or a big glass: two to three pumps, since ice dilutes the drink
Taste as you go. It is easy to add more, harder to take it out. If you want a consistent dose every time, a syrup pump lid screws straight onto a 1L bottle and delivers a measured amount with one press.
Best syrup flavours to start with
If you are building a small home collection, three flavours will cover most drinks:
- Vanilla: the most versatile. It rounds out espresso and works in hot lattes, iced coffee and even a splash in hot chocolate.
- Caramel: warm and dessert-like, brilliant in a latte or drizzled over an iced coffee.
- Hazelnut: nutty and cosy, a classic pairing with milk-based coffees.
From there, fruit flavours like strawberry, peach and passionfruit open up iced teas, sodas and mocktails once the weather warms up.
Simple café-style recipes
Vanilla latte
Add one to two pumps of vanilla syrup to your cup, pour in a shot of espresso and stir, then top with steamed or warm milk. The syrup goes in first so it dissolves fully into the hot coffee.
Iced caramel coffee
Stir two pumps of caramel syrup through your espresso or strong coffee while it is still warm, then pour over a glass of ice and top with cold milk. Adding the syrup to the warm coffee first means it never leaves an undissolved layer at the bottom.
Flavoured cold brew
Start with a smooth, low-acid freshly roasted coffee for cold brew, then stir a pump of vanilla or caramel through the finished concentrate before diluting with water or milk.
Tips for the best results
- Add syrup to the hot coffee first, before the milk or ice, so it dissolves completely.
- Go easy at first. Flavour should support the coffee, not bury it, especially with good beans.
- Store bottles in a cool, dry cupboard and use a clean pump or spoon to keep them fresh.
- Balance sweetness by using slightly less syrup if you already take sugar in your coffee.
Once you have a couple of flavours on the bench, a café-style coffee is only a pump away. Browse the full syrup range to find your favourites and start mixing at home.
